Autumn
Details
The story
Autumn follows the oldest rule of calendar pictures, in which each season is shown by its work, and here the work is the grape harvest. Bassano lines up the people, the animals and the tools across the canvas like a frieze in front of a country landscape, painted with close, vivid realism. As in the other seasons of the series, an Old Testament scene sits in the background, here Moses on the mountain receiving the tablets of the Ten Commandments.
Autumn is slightly smaller than Summer, and both canvases were enlarged with strips added at the top and bottom. Like Summer, it was long given to Francesco Bassano and now hangs under his father Jacopo's name. The Winter of the Vienna set, with Christ carrying the cross in the distance, is still given to Francesco and probably did not belong to the original series.
