Manner of Aelbert Cuyp

The story

On a museum label, "manner of" is the loosest link to a famous name. It says that a picture imitates a painter's style without coming from his hand or from his workshop. The painter here is Aelbert Cuyp of Dordrecht, known for cattle and river views bathed in a warm, golden light, whose pictures English collectors of the 18th and 19th centuries bought in large numbers.

This heading stands for no single person, and nothing is known of who painted under it. In the Mauritshuis collection in The Hague it covers a panel, a southern landscape with peasants travelling with their animals.
