Migrating Peasants in a Southern Landscape
Details
The story
This small panel has passed through some well-known hands. By 1785 it belonged to Johan van der Linden van Slingelandt, a collector in Dordrecht, the town where Aelbert Cuyp had lived and worked. It then went to Paris, to the dealer Jean-Baptiste-Pierre Lebrun, husband of the portrait painter Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, and on to London, where it changed owners several times in the decades when English buyers paid high prices for Cuyp's golden landscapes.
The words A. cuyp stand in the lower right corner, but today the museum lists the panel as in the manner of Cuyp, by an unknown imitator. It shows country people on the move with their animals through a southern landscape. The Mauritshuis bought it in 1963 and owns it, and it hangs in the Gallery Prince Willem V in The Hague.
