Manner of Martinus Josephus Geeraerts

The story

This heading covers pictures that follow the style of Martinus Josephus Geeraerts, an 18th-century Antwerp painter, without coming from his hand. Geeraerts specialised in grisailles, paintings done only in shades of grey that pass for carved marble reliefs, and over-door pieces of that kind decorated many panelled rooms of the period.

No single person stands behind the name, and nothing is known of whoever painted under it. In the Mauritshuis in The Hague it covers a canvas, a group of playing children made to sit above a door, which the museum dates to about 1740 to 1760.
