Master from Canapost
The story
Canapost is a small village in the Empordà, the countryside of north-eastern Catalonia, and its parish church once held an altarpiece of the Virgin nursing the Christ Child. Nobody knows who painted it, so art historians named its author after the village. The panel of the Virgin is now in the Museu d'Art de Girona.
He worked in the late 15th century, and among Catalan painters of his day he stands out for a calm, simple realism learned from the art of France and Flanders, with echoes of the French master Jean Fouquet. Scholars have given him further works, including the 1489 altarpiece for the Llotja, the merchants' exchange of Perpignan, and some see close links with another anonymous painter, the Master of La Seu d'Urgell.
