Petar Morozov

1880–1951 · Bulgarian

The story

Bulgaria's early modern artists mostly worked in oil paint. Petar Morozov made his mark on the printing plate. Born in the Danube town of Ruse in 1880, he trained at the drawing school in Sofia and then spent a decade, from 1905, specialising in graphic art, and he is credited with bringing colour aquatint, an etching technique that prints soft, washed tones, to Bulgaria.

He turned it on the country's past. A lover of old things, he spent years recording monasteries and churches, bridges, markets and the crooked streets of old towns, in etchings, aquatints, watercolours and pastels shown at more than 40 exhibitions across Europe and America. In his younger days he had also helped start one of Bulgaria's first humour papers and drew cartoons for it.
