Steep Street in Tarnovo
Details
The story
Tarnovo had been the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire, seat of its tsars from 1185 until the Ottomans took it in 1393, and the town keeps the shape that history gave it: houses packed onto limestone cliffs above a tight loop of the Yantra river. This coloured etching, about 25 by 29 centimetres, looks straight up one of those streets, where the lane climbs so steeply that each house sits on the roofline of the one below, and the road becomes a stair for much of its length. Morozov drew it in 1925. The cascading houses over the Yantra still draw people up the same steep cobbles today.
