Werner Holmberg
1830–1860 · Grand Duchy of Finland · Romanticism, Landscape painting
The story
A cart rolls away from us along a sandy road through pine forest on a hot summer day, the fresh wheel marks still sharp in the dust. Road in Häme, painted in 1860, is Werner Holmberg's best-known picture and hangs in the Ateneum in Helsinki. He finished it in the last year of his life.
Holmberg was born in Helsinki in 1830, and in 1853 he became the first Finnish art student to go to Düsseldorf, whose academy drew landscape painters from all over Scandinavia. There he studied under Hans Gude, the Norwegian landscape painter. The Düsseldorf habit was to compose grand views in the studio. After summer trips home to Häme and Satakunta, two provinces of southern Finland, in 1857 and to Norway the following year, Holmberg's pictures turned into fresher studies of real places.
Road in Häme joins both habits, worked up from sketches that probably came from the countryside around Tampere. Holmberg had struggled with tuberculosis for years, and by early 1860 his lungs were failing. He died in Düsseldorf that September, aged 29.
