A Path in Monet's Garden at Giverny
Details
The story
In 1942 Vienna was part of the German Reich, and the Austrian State Gallery, today's Belvedere, bought this canvas from a Berlin collection. It had belonged since 1904 to the banker Robert von Mendelssohn, who bought it from the Paris dealer Durand-Ruel, and after his death to his widow, Giulietta. Because of when the sale took place, the purchase was later examined by Austria's Art Restitution Advisory Board. In May 2023 the board recommended against restitution, finding that the sale did not arise from persecution or hardship suffered by the seller. It shows the path through Monet's garden at Giverny in late summer, running up toward the house between borders of nasturtiums, asters and dahlias, with the shadows of the trees falling across the sand. Monet signed it in the lower right corner and added the year as 02.
