A Young Woman scouring a Copper Pot
Details
The story
In the Dutch Republic of the 1660s, a small painting of a servant at her chores was something people genuinely wanted on their wall. This one, from 1664, shows a young woman bent over a copper pot, scouring it clean. Netscher had trained under Gerard ter Borch, the great painter of quiet indoor scenes, and was the most gifted pupil to come out of that workshop. The lesson shows in the restraint here: no story, no drama, just a girl, a pot, and the fall of light across her hands. The copper is where he lets himself go, giving its worked surface a slow, patient gleam that would have caught a buyer's eye from across a room.
