The story
In 2026, from March to June, this small panel went back to Umbria. The Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria in Perugia borrowed it for an exhibition on Giotto, Saint Francis and 14th-century Umbrian painting, and then it returned to the Louvre's Salle des Sept Mètres, the long gallery of early Italian panels.
It is only 27 centimetres tall, one wing of a folding diptych whose other half is also in the Louvre. The painter is the anonymous Umbrian known as the Expressionist Master of Santa Chiara, and the museum dates the panel no more closely than the 14th century. It came to the Louvre in 1973 as a long-term deposit of the Fondation de France.
