The story

Pieter de Hooch spent his best years in Delft, in the same small town and the same moment as Vermeer, painting sunlit courtyards and quiet rooms where light falls across a tiled floor. Later he moved to Amsterdam, the rich merchant capital, and his interiors grew grander to match it. This is one of those later pictures: a few well-dressed people gathered at a table over a game of cards, the sort of unhurried afternoon a prosperous household could now afford to have painted. The real subject, as so often with de Hooch, is the daylight itself, coming in from the side and settling on the faces, the cards and the floor.
