Confidences

Edmond Aman-Jean belonged to the Symbolist circle of Paris in the 1880s and 90s, a world of quiet interiors, half-lights and inward moods that set itself against both academic polish and the bright open air of the Impressionists. As a young man he shared a studio with Georges Seurat and moved among poets and painters who prized suggestion over plain statement. His favourite subject was women caught in private, unhurried moments. A title like Confidences points to exactly that, figures leaning into a shared secret, the drama kept entirely below the surface. He built these pictures on soft, muted colour and gentle contour rather than sharp detail, so that the mood carries more than the story does. Aman-Jean went on to help found the Salon des Tuileries in Paris in 1923, a yearly showcase for independent artists.
