Country House and Park
Details
The story
In the 1690s William III, stadholder of the Dutch Republic and by then also king of England, was having the gardens of his palace Het Loo laid out in straight avenues and geometric beds, and wealthy Dutch families followed the fashion around their own country houses. Jan van Nickele, as the Mauritshuis spells his name, painted this country house and its park around 1690 to 1700, on a wooden panel about 50 by 69 centimetres.
The picture was given to the museum in 1963 by Edward Speelman, a London art dealer. It belongs to the Mauritshuis and hangs in the Gallery Prince Willem V on the Buitenhof in The Hague.
