The story

In 1508 Giovanni Antonio Bazzi was in Rome, painting the vault of a small library for Pope Julius II. The pope then handed the whole room to a 25-year-old newcomer from Urbino, Raphael, who kept parts of the ceiling and took the walls himself. Bazzi went back to Siena, and this small panel comes from the years just after that, painted in oil on poplar and barely 60 centimetres high. It shows Pilate presenting Christ to the crowd, the moment that gave the picture its Latin name, and it was made for someone to keep at home and pray in front of rather than for an altar. The panel is at the Brera on deposit from a private collection, which is why the museum's catalogue carries no inventory number for it. It opened the Sodoma exhibition in Turin that closed on 6 September 2026.
