Ensor and Leman discussing painting
Details
The story
The title says the two men are discussing painting. Ensor has drawn himself in red with feathers in his hair, swinging a paintbrush, while Gerard Leman faces him in uniform with a small cannon, and Mariette Rousseau stands between them looking out at us. Leman was then an army officer who also taught experimental physics in Brussels. In 1914 he commanded the ring of forts at Liege against the invading German army and became a national figure. Mariette was the wife of Ensor's closest friend and the woman he was attached to for years. He kept the sheet out of sight. It was not exhibited until 1920 and not mentioned in print until 1922. It is about the size of a postcard.
