Finding of Moses, from the Dolls' House of Petronella Oortman
Details
The story
In the lying-in room of Petronella Oortman's dolls' house, the room where a new mother stayed in bed and received visitors for weeks after giving birth, the chimneypiece shows a baby being rescued. Pharaoh's daughter, in white with a blue mantle, looks down as one of her maids lifts the infant Moses from his basket at the edge of the Nile, and a second attendant leans in beside her. The canvas is 13.5 centimetres high. Johannes Voorhout, an Amsterdam history painter, signed it at the lower right, J. v. Hout.
