The story

The fugitives travel like wealthy people of around 1510, when this wing was painted. Cantianilla sits in a painted cart in a blue gown and a gold necklace, with the men of her party close around her. Legend says the siblings had sold their house in Rome and given the money to the poor before setting out toward Aquileia. Here the escape is already going wrong. The white animal in the harness has sunk to its knees, the rider bends low in the saddle, and from the walled town by the water a troop of horsemen with lances is coming after them. On the outer face of the same wing, seen when the altar was closed, Christ prays on the Mount of Olives while his disciples sleep, and armed men with banners are already approaching behind them.
