The story

On a red column at the edge of this scene sits a crowned golden idol. In the legend, refusing to sacrifice to such gods cost Cantius, Cantianus and Cantianilla their lives, and here the sentence is already under way. In front of the column stands a wooden beheading frame with a heavy blade, a kind of machine known in the German lands long before the French guillotine. One of the martyrs is dead. His body kneels folded on the ground, and his head, still in its red cap, lies beside the frame. Cantianilla, in a blue gown, clasps her hands as a soldier leads her forward, while a crowd dressed in the fashions of around 1510 presses behind her. On the outer face of this wing, Christ steps from his tomb holding a banner with a cross, and the guards around him are still asleep.
