Forest Landscape with Fallen Tree and Hunters
Details
The story
In the Habsburg lands of Janneck's time, hunting in the forest was a right the nobility claimed for itself. Peasants owed unpaid labour to their lords' hunts, and they bore the damage the game did to their crops. This panel takes us deep into such a wood. A party with its dogs has halted where a fallen trunk lies across a stream, just above a small waterfall. One man bends over a hound while another leans forward with an outstretched arm. Further back in the half-light, more hunters and dogs move between the trees. Tall broadleaf trees and dark firs fill nearly the whole picture, and the people are small inside it. The Belvedere lists the panel as undated and unsigned, and it owns a second forest landscape by Janneck of exactly the same size.
