Garden path
Details
The story
This garden path was painted in 1912 and was out of Macke's hands within a year. The Galerie Ernst Arnold in Dresden had it in 1913, and from there it went to Bernhard Koehler, a Berlin manufacturer who was the uncle of Macke's wife and had been buying his work since the painter was a student. Koehler kept it until he died in 1927 and his son kept it until 1960, when the state of North Rhine-Westphalia bought it. Since 1965 it has been in Münster on long-term loan, which is why the museum there lists it among the works it holds rather than owns, alongside about 35 Macke paintings and the 80 sketchbooks he left behind.
