The story
In November 1917 a New York widow, Mrs Charles Tweed, lent this canvas of riders to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Her husband, a lawyer, had most probably bought it in Paris in the first years of the century, as their son later told the museum. Before that it belonged to the Paris collector Eugène Blot, who sent it to auction in 1900 and bought it back himself, and it came up at auction again in 1906. The riders carry no names and no story, and the museum dates the picture only to about 1855. In 1941 the son, the lawyer Harrison Tweed, sold the painting to the museum.
