Interior of the Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk in Antwerp
Details
The story
On a pillar at the right of this church, one signature holds two painters. It reads Peeter neeffs, and beneath it ffrank. Pieter Neefs the Younger painted the architecture of Antwerp Cathedral, the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk, and Frans Francken III, from a large Antwerp dynasty of painters, added the small figures.
The date is hidden inside the church. Under the statue of the Virgin on the right, a Latin inscription to Saint Mary ends with the year 1654, so the panel was painted that year or a little later. On a small memorial at the left the painters lettered D.O.M., short for Deo Optimo Maximo, the usual opening of a Latin epitaph, above the name Petrus van Horen.
By 1763 the picture belonged to Prince William V. It is owned by the Mauritshuis, which shows it in the Gallery Prince Willem V in The Hague.
