The story

Two painters made this canvas, though only one of them signed it. Frederik de Moucheron put his name at lower right, Moucheron ft., short for fecit, made it, and painted the landscape. The figures are by Johannes Lingelbach, a painter born in Frankfurt who had spent several years in Rome in the late 1640s painting its streets and markets. Settled in Amsterdam, he often added the people and animals to other artists' landscapes. Both men worked in that city, and the museum dates their joint picture to around 1670.

The canvas stayed in Amsterdam, passing through four private collections, until 1827, when it was bought from an Amsterdam dealer for the Mauritshuis. The Mauritshuis owns it, and it hangs in the Gallery Prince Willem V in The Hague.
