The story

The cross still stands, with two ladders leaning against it and the plaque reading INRI at the top. Mary holds her dead son across her lap and presses her cheek to his face. John bends over them, and a man in a fur hat and a red brocade robe helps hold up the shroud. At the far left a bearded man in a turban holds a pair of pincers and the nails drawn from the hands and feet. The painter, working in Vienna around 1470, lets the story run on into the distance. Beyond the mourners, beside a small domed building, tiny figures are already carrying the body in its shroud to the grave, and a stone lid lies ready on the ground. On the far right a woman in a blue cloak stands apart, pressing a white cloth to her face.
