The story
This landscape reached Amsterdam by a route almost as unusual as the art it belongs to. It comes from the collection of Nikolai Khardzhiev, a literary scholar in Moscow who spent decades gathering the papers and pictures of the Russian avant-garde. In 1993, at the age of 90, he moved to Amsterdam with his wife, and much of the collection left Russia with him, in circumstances that are still argued over. After his death in 1996 it passed to a foundation, which has lent it to the Stedelijk long term since 2001. There Guro's work sits within the same loan as Khardzhiev's Kazimir Malevich holdings, some 175 works, mostly small drawings. The museum also has The Three, the book of 1913 that came out after Guro's death, with her poems inside and a cover by Malevich.
