The story

Claude painted this the same year, 1637, and it is the country cousin of his harbour scenes. No sea here, just a broad reach of farmland in warm afternoon light, tall trees to one side and the ground rolling back toward soft blue hills. In the middle of it a knot of peasants has stopped work to dance to a piper, the kind of festival you would have found in the fields around Rome. The setting itself is invented. Claude built his landscapes in the studio from remembered fragments, calmer and more orderly than any real valley, and that gentled countryside is exactly what his patrons were paying for. The dance is a real rural custom, set down inside a place he composed rather than found.
