Last Judgement Altarpiece, Wing: Sts Anthony, Cornelius and Mary Magdalene with a Donor
Details
The story
The first record of Lochner's Last Judgement is an inventory of 1764 from the parish church of St Laurenz in Cologne. Within a few decades the altarpiece had been taken apart. In the early 19th century its wings were sawn up. Their inner faces became 12 separate scenes of the apostles' martyrdoms, which the Städel in Frankfurt bought in 1830. The painted backs were split away from them, and the saints were fitted back together as a row. This panel, with Saint Anthony, Pope Cornelius and Mary Magdalene beside a kneeling donor, reached Munich in 1827 with the collection of the Boisserée brothers, two Cologne collectors, while the Last Judgement itself stayed in Cologne and hangs in the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum. A recent restoration has brought back much of the panel's quality. The background, black today, once held small blue clouds.
