Miniature Portrait of an Unknown Man, from the Dolls' House of Petronella Dunois
Details
The story
This man wears a long, curled blond wig, a red coat with a grey-blue cloak over it and a linen shirt tied at the neck with a bow, the dress of a well-off gentleman in the early 1700s. He is painted on ivory, a support miniaturists took up around 1700, following the Venetian painter Rosalba Carriera, because its pale surface glows through thin watercolour. The Rijksmuseum dates this portrait between about 1700 and 1724, so it is younger than the dolls' house it belongs to, which was furnished around 1676. It is under five centimetres high, in a gilt limewood frame carved with a scallop shell.
