Mountainous River Landscape in Italy
Details
The story
The earliest known owner of this small copper was Thomas, Count de Fraula, a collector in Brussels whose pictures were sold after his death in 1738. The same sale included the panel by Rembrandt now known as the Philosopher in Meditation, in the Louvre. Willem de Heusch's river landscape and its companion, a mountain road on a plate of the same size, stayed together and ended up with Hermina Jacoba, Baroness van Leyden, at Warmond near Leiden. At the auction of her collection in 1816 the pair was bought for the Dutch royal picture gallery, which moved into the Mauritshuis in 1822.
In the picture a rider and a pair of cattle come down a track toward a river, where a man stands fishing below a tall mountain. The Mauritshuis still owns the painting and shows it in the Gallery Prince Willem V in The Hague.
