The story
Macke painted this seated nude in 1913, on cardboard rather than canvas, the support he used for a great many of his oils. The museum's title keeps the subject at that: Akt, a seated female nude, inventory number 962 LM.
The provenance line tells the rest. From 1914 to 1953 the painting belonged to the artist's estate, and in 1953 the museum in Münster bought it. Much of what he left behind travelled the same way. The LWL-Museum now holds around 35 of his paintings, all 80 surviving sketchbooks, graphic work, and his written estate of letters and index cards recording his pictures one by one, which stand in for a full catalogue of his work.
