The story

This is a small picture, 35 by 26 centimetres, and its entire subject is the head of an old man. The Athens gallery dates it to about 1880, the year the Munich academy made Gyzis an honorary member. He first came to Munich on a scholarship in 1865, spent the early 1870s back in Greece, and from 1875 lived in the city for good. The museum's record names no sitter. It hangs in the main building of the National Gallery under the inventory number Π.1655.
