The story

In 1952 the Prado's board bought a large landscape in London, and the next year it entered the collection as a Murillo. Today the museum is more careful and files it as attributed to him. The picture is close to two metres high, unusual for a genre that Seville painters treated as a sideline, and it is peopled the way Spanish landscapes of the 17th century usually are, with a donkey, a dog, doves and a rooster among the figures near the water. Murillo's landscapes are a small and contested group, and this one has since been discussed both in the literature on his school and in a recent study of Francisco de Herrera the Younger, a Sevillian contemporary. It is not currently on view; the Prado keeps it in store.
