Portrait of a Learned Man
Details
The story
This is early Moroni, painted around 1550, when Giovanni Battista Moroni was in his mid-twenties and not long out of the Brescia workshop of Moretto, the older painter who trained him. It shows a man of learning whose name has been lost. There is no grand setting and no flattery here, just a face given the same steady, unhurried attention Moroni gave to everyone, from bishops to tradesmen. He worked mostly around Bergamo, in Lombardy, away from Venice and Rome, and that distance let him build a plainer, more exact kind of portrait than the grand manner of the big centres. The format is small, barely more than head and shoulders, the intimate scale he favoured before the tall, formal commissions of his later years.
