Jacopo Tintoretto · PD
Portrait of a Young Woman
Details
The story
The museum's own label hedges. It does not say this is by Tintoretto, it says the picture is attributed to him, which is a different claim and an honest one. There is no signature, no contract, no mention in a document, and no name for the woman. The comparisons are thin as well. Nearly all of Tintoretto's surviving portraits are of men, most of them holders of office in the Venetian Republic, so a female sitter leaves an attribution with much less to lean on. Venice produced a great many such portraits in the second half of the 16th century, which is as close as the Prado will date this one. The canvas is 114 centimetres by 100, and it came out of the Spanish royal collection with none of that information attached.
