The story

The young woman here was born in Paris in 1874, while her father was living there on a scholarship from the St Petersburg Academy of Arts. At home the family called her the Parisian for it. Repin painted her in 1898, when she was 24 and he was a professor at the same Academy that had once sent him abroad. Nadezhda's own life narrowed afterwards. From 1914 she lived withdrawn at Penaty, her father's house on the Gulf of Finland, together with him and her elder sister Vera, and she died there in 1931.
