Portrait of Vittoria della Rovere
Details
The story
By 1645, when Furini painted this, the della Rovere dukes of Urbino had run out of male heirs, and everything they owned had a new home. Vittoria della Rovere, shown here in her twenties, was the last of that line. Her marriage to Grand Duke Ferdinando II de' Medici carried the family's whole ducal collection to Florence, Titian's Venus of Urbino among it. She wears a silver medal stamped with her arms, an oyster holding a pearl. She ordered the portrait herself for the Villa Poggio Imperiale, and if you look at the chair beneath her, Furini seems to have left it barely finished.
