The story
By 1890 Guillaumin had spent close to 20 years on the working reaches of the Seine around Paris. The Musée d'Orsay alone holds his Port of Charenton of 1878 and his Quai de la Rapée of 1887, both of them river frontage on the edge of the city, and this canvas comes out of the same long habit. Its record keeps the place to itself. The Israel Museum lists it simply as a river scene, oil on canvas, France, 1890, naming no river and no town. It reached Jerusalem long after the painter's death, left to the museum's American Friends by Gertrude Feuerring, a collector in New York.
