The story
By the early 1620s Procaccini's pictures were leaving Milan. Genoese families were buying them, and Cosimo II de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, sent him a gold medal. He put that medal into this portrait, on show, so that anyone looking would know his name now carried past Lombardy.
In the upper right he wrote it out himself, G. Cesare Precacino, and the year, 1624. It is the last work he dated, which is part of why the picture is looked at so closely. The canvas is small, 70 by 49 centimetres.
He died in Milan on 14 November of the following year, at 51.
