Still Life with Vase and Jug
Details
The story
In the spring of 1909 Jawlensky pointed his painter friends towards a house in the Bavarian town of Murnau, where a brewer named Krötz had collected more than 1,000 pictures painted on glass, Bavarian and Bohemian folk work with flat colour locked inside hard dark outlines. He spent that summer in Murnau himself, and those glass paintings and other pieces of religious folk art began turning up in his still lifes, along with the way they were made, colour laid down flat and fenced by contour. This table of flowers and pottery is from the same year. He painted it on cardboard rather than canvas, about 50 centimetres by 43. He signed the back and wrote the date there, and on that same reverse is the head of a woman, sketched in blue paint.
