The story
Isaac van Kipshaven signed and dated this canvas at lower left, IV Kipshaven 1661, the IV standing for Isaack van. Signed and dated pictures like this one are the main evidence for his career, which otherwise survives in only a handful of records.
The painting reached the Mauritshuis in 1935 as a gift from D. Katz, the art dealers in Dieren, a village in Gelderland, whose gallery was run by the brothers Nathan and Benjamin Katz and dealt in old master paintings. It belongs to the museum and hangs in the Gallery Prince Willem V in The Hague.
