The Archbishop Pedro
Details
The story
His name is painted on the canvas, in gold at the upper right, Petrus Archiepiscopus. That did not stop three royal inventories from calling him something else. In 1746, in the rooms of Isabel de Farnesio at La Granja, he was listed as an original by Titian showing a cardinal dressed in purple with his cap. In 1794 at Aranjuez he was a cardinal by Bassano, and the description was repeated again in 1818. Only in 1857, when the picture had reached the royal museum in Madrid, did the cataloguer look at the background, read the inscription and write it down. The attribution moved too, and it now sits with Jacopo Tintoretto, somewhere in the second half of the 16th century. Which archbishop Peter this is has never been settled. In the lower corner at the right there is a small painted fleur-de-lis, the mark the queen put on the pictures she owned.
