The Virgin and Child with St Mary Magdalene and a Donor
Details
The story
In 1522 Lucas van Leyden painted this as a diptych, two small hinged wings with rounded tops that closed like a book. On one the Virgin holds the child. On the other Mary Magdalene presents a kneeling donor, the man who paid for the picture. Since then the object has been taken apart and put back together more than once. Early in the 17th century the two wings were joined into a single panel and filled out into a rectangle. The donor was given new attributes at that time and became Saint Joseph. In 1874 the Annunciation painted on the outside of the right wing was detached, and the operation badly damaged its centre. In 1911 some of the added strips were cut back again. That Annunciation now hangs in the same room.
