View of a Dutch Canal, possibly the Oude Gracht in Haarlem
Details
The story
On the steps at the left of this canal view someone painted J Berckheyd: 1666. The Mauritshuis thinks the signature is probably not Job Berckheyde's own, and catalogues the panel as a product of his Haarlem workshop. Even the place is not certain. The museum calls it a Dutch canal, possibly the Oude Gracht in Haarlem.
From about 1824 the picture belonged to Johan Steengracht van Oostkapelle, the first director of the Mauritshuis, and then to his heirs. In 1913, the year the family's collection was sold in Paris, the Mauritshuis bought this panel with support from the Rembrandt Association, a Dutch society that helps museums acquire art. It belongs to the museum and hangs in the Gallery Prince Willem V in The Hague.
