The story

The picture is a copy, and that is the interesting part. The scene was invented around 1565 by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, whose original has since disappeared entirely. In 1623, near the end of his own life, his son Jan Brueghel the Elder painted this version and kept the lost composition alive. A wedding party winds along a village road, from the houses toward a church half hidden in the trees. The men and the women walk in separate files, each led by the groom or the bride, with a piper working his bagpipes out in front. Jan died two years later, in 1625. The panel now hangs in the Maison du Roi on the Grand Place in Brussels.
