The story

Hilti is a name most people know from the side of a power drill. The company was founded in 1941 by the brothers Martin and Eugen Hilti in Schaan, a few kilometres from Vaduz, and grew into a global maker of construction tools. From the 1970s the family also collected modern art.

Since May 2015 a selection from that collection has had its own building in Vaduz, a four-storey white cube by the Basel architects Morger Partner. It stands right beside the black cube of the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, and the two share an entrance. The collection numbers some 200 works, strongest in Cubism, Expressionism and Futurism, from Paul Gauguin and Picasso to Max Beckmann, Fernand Léger and Alberto Giacometti. It also holds an early landscape by Georges Seurat, The Pile of Stones.

The foundation rehangs its rooms as a new show every 12 to 18 months, often pairing the classics with a contemporary artist.
