Kunsthaus Zürich

The Kunsthaus in Zurich holds the largest group of paintings by Edvard Munch outside Norway, gathered early by a city that took the brooding Norwegian seriously long before most. It also keeps a room of Alberto Giacometti's spindly bronze figures, fitting for a museum in the artist's home country, along with strong holdings of Swiss art and European modernism.

In 2021 the museum roughly doubled in size with a cool, boxy extension by the British architect David Chipperfield, which made it the largest art museum in Switzerland. That new wing arrived with an argument attached. It houses the collection of Emil Bührle, a Zurich arms manufacturer who grew rich selling weapons during the Second World War and bought Impressionist masterpieces, some of which had passed through the hands of Jewish owners forced to sell or flee. The museum now displays the Bührle pictures alongside research into where each one came from, so a visit to see Monet, Cézanne and Van Gogh here comes with the question of how they were acquired.
