The story
Randers Kunstmuseum sits inside Kulturhuset, a modernist cultural centre in the middle of the Jutland town of Randers, designed by the architect Flemming Lassen and opened in 1969. The museum itself is much older. A group of local art lovers founded it in 1887, and the work carrying inventory number 0001 is a picture by Nicolai Abildgaard, the 18th-century Danish history painter, of Richard III before the Battle of Bosworth.
The collection covers Danish art of the 19th and 20th centuries and runs to more than 4,000 works. There are Golden Age painters such as C.W. Eckersberg and Christen Købke, as well as Vilhelm Hammershøi. L.A. Ring's Summer Day at Roskilde Fjord, from 1900, is one of the best-known pictures in the house. Later come modernists, Cobra artists and the Young Wild Ones, the Danish painters of the 1980s. Sven Dalsgaard, a painter born in Randers, is represented by more than 1,000 works.
