The story

The Rosengart Collection is the private hoard of two Lucerne art dealers, father and daughter, opened to the public in 2002 in a solemn former branch of the Swiss National Bank. Siegfried Rosengart began dealing in modern pictures early in the 20th century, and his daughter Angela worked beside him and held back the works they could not bear to sell.

Two artists dominate. There are around 180 works by Pablo Picasso and roughly 125 by Paul Klee, enough to follow each man across decades in a single afternoon. Angela knew Picasso well. He painted her five times, and one of those portraits hangs among the pictures she chose to keep.

The rest fills in the story of classic modernism with Cézanne, Monet, Matisse, Chagall and Miró, a few rooms that move from Impressionism to the edge of abstraction.
