The story

Piet Mondrian was born in this house on the Kortegracht canal in Amersfoort on 7 March 1872. His father was headmaster of the Christian primary school next door, and the museum now takes in both buildings. The family moved to the east of the country when the boy was about eight.

The house became a museum in 1994, when the architect Leo Heidenrijk and his wife Cis opened it as the Mondriaanhuis, and after a renovation it reopened on 7 March 2017, his birthday. Its best-known room recreates his Paris studio of the 1920s, where he pinned coloured cards to the white walls and kept moving them about, treating the room itself as a composition. A second space evokes his last years in New York, with projections and sound from the 1940s.
